Welcome to Kanpur

Kanpur (formerly Cawnpore) is a large industrial city, also known as the Manchester of the East, in Uttar Pradesh, India, which is located at the banks of River Ganges. Being the 12th most populous city, it is significantly one of the most important city in India as it is the Leather city of the world and it features National Institutes like IIT Kanpur and HBTI.

History

Kanpur Massacre

The city got its name in year 1207, when Raja Kang Deo of Kanhpuria clan established the village of Kanhpur. It came to known as Cawnpore by the Britishers, which later was named Kanpur. In 19th century, Kanpur was an important British Garrison with barracks for 7,000 soldiers. 1857’s revolt was also started in Kanpur, known as Siege of Cawnpore, under the rebel leader Nana Sahib.

Kanpur is also home to Lal Imli Clock, known as the Big Ben of Kanpur. It was brought to the city in 1911 but began ticking from 1921.

Geography

Kanpur is located at coordinates – 26.449923°N 80.331874°E. It is around 80km away from state’s capital, Lucknow and around 450km from the nation’s capital, New Delhi.

One of the most important places in Kanpur is Kanpur Central Railway Station, which is the third busiest railway station in India and the busiest station in North Central Railways.
